Painter Christopher Pothier’s subject matter is wide ranging, from portraiture and still lifes to abstract images that suggest cosmology. It is for his figurative work, however, that Pothier is best known. When seeking inspiration, Pothier draws upon various masters from the history of art, citing influences from the sixteenth century portrait painter Hans Holbein and Northern European altarpiece painters to the famous surrealist Salvador Dali. . “…My studies have lead me to believe that painting is a lifelong dedication, consisting of great skill and technical knowledge combined with a creative edge and personal feeling to make an image…symbolize things which exist in many forms,” notes Pothier.
Pothier’s work is also somewhat unusual in that he paints on panel rather than canvas. This surface lends itself better to the multi-layered technique Pothier favors, as the firmness of the panel allows him to lay glazes and fan oil color to his specific taste.
Pothier earned a BFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is the sole proprietor of CWA Pothier Fine Art, a business that designs and produces artwork for corporate and residential clients. Pothier executes both original and commissioned works in the form of murals, graphics and decorative painting. Additionally, he teaches painting at the New Hampshire Institute of Art and has exhibited at several galleries in and around Concord.
