Dave Dodge paints landscapes, primarily en plein air, and is a continual student of nature and traditional landscape art. David’s passion for his work is clear. He astutely articulates that emotional connection between the rendering of his art in relation to on-site places of heartfelt inspiration as only one who consistently creates in tandem and in harmony with the elements of nature fully understands. “As a student of the traditional approach to landscape painting, I believe nature to be the greatest teacher. Only by being there can one learn to see the subtleties which are the defining aspects captured by those who have created the richest landscape art throughout history. When outside, an exhilarating energy comes with the changing light and weather, and the challenge to capture what I feel to be the essence of a place at a particular moment in time while expressing my deep love and respect for the landscape.” The results of his masterful efforts and steadfast appreciation for the plein air process are keenly apparent in every piece he puts forth. His methods offer art enthusiasts grand opportunity to appreciate and support not only high quality work, but cultural tradition in its truest form.
David’s love of the outdoors and the landscape began in the Connecticut River valley of western New Hampshire where the farmland looks to Mount Ascutney. As a youth, ski races took him to the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont where the vistas inspired him. Summers were spent in the serene beauty of the Sunapee, New Hampshire region. Art began to be a focus for him at Kimball Union Academy which provided a foundation for Syracuse University where he majored in illustration, studied advertising design, and despite the flatter terrain, continued ski racing. Graduating with a BFA, he moved to Westport, Connecticut and began work as a designer and illustrator in the metropolitan New York area. He returned to New Hampshire in the mid-eighties and continued to work as a designer. When the design world entered the digital age, he embraced the new technology, but found he missed the hands-on work. When a painter friend introduced him to outdoor painting, he became hooked instantly. David continues active involvement in the arts community of the region and continues to challenge himself through advanced workshops both here in the New England region and abroad in Scotland.
David has exhibited widely in the New Hampshire region in solo, juried, and invitational venues including shows on Painting the Conserved Landscape and the White Mountain School Revisted.
He and his wife Kathryn reside on East Mountain in Peterborough, New Hampshire and enjoy traveling to new places along with regular painting/hiking trips to the favorite spots in the White Mountains, Maine coast, Nantucket, California, Arizona, and Scotland.
