To call fourth generation artist Jane Balshaw a textile artist is to capture but a fraction of her creativity. Working in a quiet studio in the colonial country village of Canterbury, New Hampshire, Balshaw renders dynamic, colorful visual poetry, quilted textiles that are truly unique and utterly captivating. Recognized nationwide for her precise use of color and unique sense of design, Balshaw describes her work as “Contemporary Folk, embracing the rich traditions of the craft of textiles while incorporating more modern techniques and contemporary styles as my clients have dictated.”
Balshaw’s creations spring from the artist’s long personal history with fabric and color. Her education was in Interior & Fashion Design with an emphasis on Color Theory. Further studies led Balshaw to develop a particular theory for the blending and use of color based on the principles of Fibonacci’s number, sequencing and the Golden Ration. This theory, which Balshaw named the Triadic Color Theory System © is a method that the artist uses extensively when creating her textile art. “My scientific interest in color and design and my love of the traditional art of sewing have come together as an artistic expression through my quilted textiles,” explains Balshaw. “Although I do approach my work with an end result in mind, my greatest pleasure in producing it is the analytical process I go through. For me, each piece is an individual study as I decipher which methods I will use, what mathematical proportions should be used, what design theme is appropriate and what colors will produce the greatest emotional response from the viewer considering the particular use and placement of that piece.”
Balshaw has exhibited her art extensively throughout the United States and has won numerous accolades including the “Best in Two Dimensional Design Award” in the “Living with Craft Exhibit” at the juried League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Fair (2004). Her works grace many private collections including that of the Franzia Winery in Napa Valley, California.
