Michael Roundy’s abstractions evoke the feeling of controlled chaos. In some, brightly colored forms seem to struggle against the geometry imposed upon them by the frame, while others seem to evince a desire for harmony and calm. “Within my work,” notes Roundy, “I discuss, on a very fundamental level, the relationship of chaos and order and the relative desire for us, as humans, to seek order in what would appear to be a disordered universe.”
In creating his images, Roundy draws upon the Fibonacci series, a mathematical growth sequence found in nature. Roundy uses this series, he explains, “to proportion the linear and geometric shapes I place on top of, within and underneath the organic fields. It is the science of nature and our role in it that drives me to ponder, discover and create with the luscious medium of paint,” says Roundy.
Roundy received his B.A. in fine arts from Humboldt State University and his M.F.A. in painting from New York’s Pratt Institute. His works have been included in group exhibitions on both the east and west coasts and are held in a number of public and private collections.
