The creations of glass artist Peter Muller appear to undulate. The mouths and bodies of his vessels curve sinuously as bright lines of glass swirl around their exterior. The dance between maker and material is evident, and enticing. “Since the first moment I plunged a blow pipe into a pot of molten glass I've been hopelessly addicted to taming glass, the most elusive of materials,” confesses Muller. “Over the years I moved beyond taming the glass and began tuning in to its natural rhythm and flow, its heating and cooling life cycle - I began to master this art.”
According to Muller, the art of glass-blowing is one in which the maker never stops learning and exploring. “Molten glass as a medium provides an artist with seemingly non-existent boundaries of expression,” he asserts. “In my personal exploration of glass, I strive to assimilate the many techniques required to capture the beautiful forms of nature within the lines of each piece.”
Muller studied music and art at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; he also studied with Australian glass artist Nick Mount at The Studio Glass School in the Corning Museum of Glass. He has won numerous “Best in Show” awards as well as the “Best New Exhibitor” award at the 100 American Craftsmen show in Lockpart, NY and the 2005 “Excellence in Craft Award” at the Bruce Museum Craft Show in Greenwich, CT. He is the owner, designer and creator of Afternoon Glass Designs in Guilford, VT.
