Richard Gombar's paintings are quiet and soothing, visual paens to the beauty of the Vermont landscape just outside his door. Whether capturing the lush beauty of a rich, green field or the timeless elegance of an old barn blanketed in snow, Gombar reminds the viewer of the beauty of everyday life. "My work takes viewer[s] out of their normal context, their quotidian life, and presents back to them that which they have never seen before, or something that they see everyday and make[s] it special for them," observes Gombar. "I paint simple interpretations of real places that capture and hold the attention and imagination."
While captivating, Gombar's images are not the typical, pastoral scenes that one might expect in a Vermont landscape. Rather, these images tend toward abstractionthe landscapes have a sharp, edgy feel and seem to capture the essential essence of a scene. "I consider myself a romantic minimalist [who is] painting realistically within abstract parameters," says Gombar. "…I am trying to say something in paint about light, color, painting and a real search for a certain truth. I am trying to reach beyond the borders of the ordinary. I seem to fall somewhere…in the cracks between realism and abstraction."
Gombar holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He has exhibited widely throughout the Northeast, and his works appear in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the U.S.
