Although adept at still-life painting as well, Joe Vivilecchia's self-professed specialty is the creation of bold large-scale paintings featuring portraiture. This artist is drawn towards depicting the essence of his subjects through uniquely stylized work with an inspired sculptural quality to it. His work by design, includes people who are important to him and studies in self-portraiture as well.
His paintings evolve dramatically from the initial stages to the striking end results. He starts with an idea or subject, and then figuratively gives reign to the process with the belief that the painting should take turns along the way, evolving as the artist responds cathartically during its creation. Joe uses knowledge and experience as a guide, and then, lets intuition do the rest.
When painting a portrait, he looks at the subject, as if about to sculpt it, breaking it up in his mind into segments and planes. He separates the planes with different colors or pattern work, which gives his paintings a more loose and abstracted look. He then goes back and refines, and then refines again … and again, masterfully encouraging the subject to reveal itself.
