Collectors covet the exquisitely-rendered oil paintings of York, Maine-based artist Sean Beavers for their emotional resonance as well as their technical virtuosity. A symbolist who creates works in seriesstill lifes, landscapes, figurative works--Beavers creates images that reflect something more than the objects themselves--dreams, desires, frustrations, spirit, emotions, whatever concerns the artist at a given time. “I try to arrange the composition, the background, the quality of light, everything in a piece to try to communicate my thoughts,” the artist notes. “I know it’s unlikely that a viewer will understand exactly what I’m trying to say, but I hope they walk away with a sense of it, and their own interpretation of what the piece means to them.”
Beavers constructs his paintings much as the old masters did, starting with a smaller format study that allows him to explore and refine the image, then translating that scene to a larger format. In the early phases of his work, one can see the pen and ink underdrawing that outlines his basic vision. This sketch is gradually subsumed by the many layers of carefully delineated brushstrokes that Beavers applies. The resulting, highly finished oil painting captures the eye with its stunning attention to detail, then draws the viewer in as if by force. “I’ve realized that the ordinary can be quite extraordinary if enough care is given to try to observe and understand these things,” says the artist.
Beavers attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he earned a B.F.A. and was awarded the Rhodes Family Medal for outstanding achievement. In addition to creating his own works, Beavers also teaches drawing and painting at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester and at The Sanctuary Arts in Eliot, Maine. His works have been featured in numerous exhibits in and around the New York metropolitan area as well as in Maine and New Hampshire and are held in many private collections. Beavers has also executed a number of commissions for such corporate clients as AT&T, The Wall Street Journal, The Turner Networks, Time Life Inc., and The Village Voice to name a few.
