Tracy Helgeson’s paintings are a feast for the senses, to be enjoyed both visually and viscerally. Her scenes of rural landscapes, from barns to farmhouses, are rendered in rich, deep hues of red, orange, and aubergine that immediately communicate warmth and a sense of well-being. “In creating a painting, my intent is to capture an evocative feeling and an essence of the landscape that I feel a connection to,” asserts Helgeson. While Helgeson looks to the world around her for inspiration, she admits that she often alters composition, color and light to more accurately reflect the emotions that a scene elicits from her.
Helgeson also confesses to being enamored of the painting process itself, a fact readily evident in her richly worked surfaces. “I truly appreciate the process of painting,” says Helgeson. “I like the texture of the surfaces that I prepare, the color of the underpainting, the softness of a brush, the smell of the paint, medium, and turpentine, and the excitement of laying down layer after layer of color.”
Helgeson studied illustration at the Philadelphia College of Art and graphic design at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Her works have been featured in exhibitions across the country including, most recently, the Northeastern Fine Art Juried Exhibition at Green Trees Gallery in Northfield, MA; the Mamoroneck Artists Guild Small Works Juried Show in Larchmont, NY; the International Small Works Exhibition at the Red Dot Fine Arts Gallery in Santa Fe, NM; and “Three Solo Shows” at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY.
